German Game Developer Awards 2011Hello Fishlabs fans, the year 2011 is almost over and we’d like to thank our friends, community, business partners and media contacts for all the support you’ve given us in the past 12 months. The last year had been really successful for us and a lot of amazing things have happened here at the Fishlabs camp. All in all, we have released five new games (three own titles and two brand games) throughout the course of this year, won a couple of prestigious awards and ported our flagship title, the highly popular sci-fi shooter and trader Galaxy on Fire 2, to a whole variety of new platforms and systems.[full]

The year 2011 kicked off really nicely with our action-packed fun sports spectacle Snowboard Hero winning two IMGAwards in February and being officially released on the App Store in March. In April we then ported our popular sci-fi shooter Galaxy on Fire 2 to Android in an exclusive Xperia PLAY version and later on that month, the game’s first add-on Valkyrie saw the light of day as well. In June another Android version followed especially for Tegra 2 devices and in July we released the arcade hit Waterslide 2.

In August we moved to a beautiful new office building right in the heart of Hamburg city and in September we celebrated the very first release of a Fishlabs title on a non-mobile device, namely Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD on the Mac—which is easily the best looking instalment within the Galaxy on Fire series so far.

In November we put out Sports Car Challenge, another successful ad-game for Volkswagen featuring highly detailed and beautifully rendered 3D models of the latest super sports cars from Audio, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche and Volkswagen! And in December we last but not least won the “Best Studio 2011” award at the renowned German Game Developer Awards.

All of this wouldn’t have been possible without your constant help and support and we’re eager to see what 2012 will have in store for Fishlabs. We’ve got a lot of plans and projects up our sleeves and will reveal the first spectacular news rather soon. Until then the whole Fishlabs team wishes all our friends, fans and partners a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you soon!

Sports Car Challenge v1.1 – Faster, classier and more spectacular than ever!

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Thumbnail - Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport With more than 1.5 million downloads and 15 million minutes of unsolicited brand engagement in less than two weeks, Sports Car Challenge has made quite an impact on the iOS racing community. However, since both driving forces behind the game, Volkswagen (China) and Fishlabs Entertainment, are always very eager to give their fans the best product possible, we have not rested on our laurels for too long, but rather worked hard on the first update for the game. And unlike most other app updates, Sports Car Challenge v1.1 not only fixes a couple of minor glitches but also adds a whole lot of new features and content to the game![full]

While the overall feedback from the fans and media was really positive, there were still a couple of minor things that the gamers would have loved to see included to the game in the future, the most important of which were a 1st person driver’s view and a more slick and sensible handling of the cars. Needless to say that we have made both of these features available in version 1.1 of Sports Car Challenge. But that’s not all! Furthermore, we have also added an additional exterior camera, put a driver behind the steering wheel and given you the chance to explore the classy interiors of all six super sports cars in the showroom via 360° panorama view!

The cockpit view and panorama view have been designed on the basis of a multitude of high-resolution photographs taken at the respective brands’ official showrooms, such as the Lamborghini shop in Berlin. In the creation of the sophisticated cube-maps of each car’s interior, the different lighting conditions during the photo sessions turned out to be particularly challenging, but our graphics artists and programmers all did a fantastic job and we’re more than pleased with the final outcome!

Just like the cockpit view, the enhanced controls positively affect the game’s level of realism as well and make the illusion of mastering a 640 PS powerhouse like the Bentley Supersports ISR even more real! Can you sustain the thrill of speed and keep your high-speed super sports car on the track? Hamburg – A Haven for Games Developers

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Last Friday, our CEO Michael Schade and the representatives of 19 other Hamburg-based gaming companies attended a special industry brunch in the town hall, where they discussed future proceedings and opportunities for the gaming stronghold Hamburg with the city’s Mayor Olaf Scholz. The constant demand of skilled employees, the tough housing situation (which is especially hard for people who are coming to Hamburg from the outside) and new sponsoring and financing models for upcoming games productions were the main topics of the lively discussion.[full] Needless to say, the city of Hamburg will continue to support its local developers as good as possible in the future and make sure that it will keep its position as Germany’s prior and most vivid gaming location.

In Hamburg, the potential of video games as an industry had been recognized early on and ever since 2003 the city has bolstered its local gaming studios with the aid of the widely spread industry network gamecity:Hamburg. Today, there are about 150 different gaming companies with more than 3000 employees located in Hamburg and it looks as if these numbers will increase rather than decrease in the future. In recent days, the fantastic performances of Hamburg-based studios such as Fishlabs, Bigpoint or Daedelic at the German Game Developer Awards 2011 have given further proof to the fact that Hamburg is indeed Germany’s Game City #1. Video games have become as much a part of our beautiful hanseatic city as the fish market, the Michel and the Alster and we are positive that this development has far from reached its peak yet!

Fishlabs wins German Game Developer Award 2011 for the Best Games Studio!

Friday, December 9th, 2011

Wow, big news! On Wednesday, December 7th, 2011, our CEO Michael Schade and our PR & Marketing Manager Marc Morian visited the eighth annual German Game Developer Award ceremony at the Altes Kesselhaus in Duesseldorf, where Fishlabs was nominated in the category “Best Studio 2011” besides such distinguished companies as Chimera Entertainment (Demolition Dash), Crenetic (Der Schatz der Delfine), Deck13 (Tiger & Chicken), Blue Byte (Die Siedler 7) and Crytek (Crysis 2). And you know what’s most awesome about it? We’ve won![full]

Yes, that’s right! Fishlabs, who already received a German Game Developer Award for the fantasy role-playing game Blades & Magic in the category “Best Mobile Game” back in 2007, can henceforth proudly credit themselves with the euphonic title of “Best Studio 2011”. Needless to say, we’re extremely happy about the academy’s choice to hand the award over to Fishlabs and see it as a wonderful reward for the effort and passion that each and everyone of us puts into his work day after day to help in the creation of 3D premium titles which put mobile gaming to a whole new level. Many of our employees have been onboard of the Fishlabs vessel for years and have not only witnessed the ups but also the downs of a totally unpredictable and incredibly fast-moving industry firsthand. Hence we’re all the more proud of our team in general and the fact, that everyone who works here wholeheartedly believes in our vision and shares our passion, in particular.

“We are extremely happy to receive this award and I would first and foremost like to thank our whole team not only for the development of truly outstanding mobile games, but also for sticking with us in good times and bad times alike,” said Fishlabs CEO Michael Schade in his acceptance speech. “But there is also another man without whom we would not be where we are today: Steve Jobs. He created a revolutionary gaming platform, whose enormous flexibility and broad reach are absolutely unrivalled and whose importance for a studio like us can hardly be overestimated. Thank you!”

All in all, the year 2011 has been really amazing for us, because not only have we moved into a wonderful new office building right in the heart of Hamburg City, but also have we celebrated a whole lot of successes with our flagship title Galaxy on Fire 2, such as the release of the first add-on Valkyrie, the receipt of the German Video Game Award in the category “Best Mobile Game” and the porting of the popular sci-fi shooter to a variety of new platforms and devices such as Android, iPad 2, iPhone 4S and Mac. And that’s not all because we’ve also developed another top-notch ad-game for Volkswagen with the critically acclaimed premium racer Sports Car Challenge! With this being said, the German Game Developer Award in the category “Best Studio 2011” rounds off a fulfilling, exciting and successful year for Fishlabs and serves as a wonderful acknowledgement of all the hard work and effort we display day after day to achieve our one big aim, namely to offer gamers from all over the world a long-lasting, challenging and truly outstanding gaming experience!

The new update 1.2 finally turns Snowboard Hero into a universal app for iPhone, iPod touch and now also iPad and furthermore enables the users to synchronize their save games via iCloud. For the first time ever, Snowboard Heroes from all over the world can now switch freely between their iPhones, iPods and iPads throughout the course of the very same career!

In addition to that, Snowboard Hero does now also support AppleTV Air Play and hence the users can not only experience the enhanced graphics of the game on the small display of their iPhone or on the slightly bigger display of their iPad, but also follow the action on the slope on the big TV screen in 720p (Wi-Fi) or Full HD (HDMI)!

The slope is yours, pals! But don’t forget to put on your scarves, gloves and bobble caps, because despite the game’s intuitive touch and tilt controls, which are easy to learn yet hard to master, you will most likely end up taking quite a few dives into the ice-cold snow before you land all your spectacular tricks at ease and grind along the craziest obstacles without losing your balance! So enjoy the ride, fellow Snowboard Heroes and keep in mind: winter time is snowboarding time!

Fishing for Talents! – Fishlabs at Making Games Talents 2011

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Morian presents Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD at Making Games Talents 2011On November 5th, 2011, the eighth installment of the German games industry’s leading recruiting event Making Games Talents took place at the University of Hamburg. It was the second time that the high-flying job fair organized by IDG Entertainment and supported by Gamecity: Hamburg took place in the beautiful city of Hamburg and the first time ever that Fishlabs Entertainment participated and presented itself to a total of 150 students, all of which are eager to pursue a career in the games industry after they’ve finished their studies. At Making Games Talents 2011, Fishlabs Entertainment was represented by our CEO Michael Schade, our PR and Marketing Manager Marc Morian, our Marketing Assistant Daniel Sadowski and our Game Monetization Trainee Hanno Trennt and we competed for the favour of the attendees with seven other high-profile representatives of the German video game industry[full], such as Bigpoint (Battlestar Galactica), InnoGames (Tribal Wars), Crytek (Crysis 2) or Spellbound (Gothic IV). The overall concept of Making Games Talents is quite a bit different from that of other job fairs because at these particular events it’s not the talents, who introduce themselves to potential employers, but rather is it the companies, who present themselves to the programming, game design and graphics prodigies of tomorrow.

Across the day, Michael held several speeches and presentations, including a key note about Hamburg as Germany’s prior video gaming location as well as a brief introduction of Fishlabs Entertainment and a more in-depth presentation of our company and our most spectacular titles, such as the action-packed 3D outer space adventure Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD or the stunningly beautiful premium racer Sports Car Challenge. Infront of an intrigued audience, Michael elaborated on the huge advantages and promising perspectives of the mobile market and explained how smartphones and tablets have already replaced consoles as the world’s most widespread gaming platforms and how Fishlabs has managed to establish itself as a key player in the industry by co-operating successfully with blue chip clients and carriers  such as Apple, NOKIA, Sony Ericsson and Samsung on the one hand and by releasing high-quality premium games in state-of-the-art console quality on the other! The importance and potential of the mobile market can hardly be overestimated these days and yet this industry is still lightyears away from having reached its peak!

Due to its slick organization and brisk attendance, the event turned out to be a full-scale success for us, not only because the whole Fishlabs crew had a great time and lots of fun at Making Games Talents 2011, but also because the students present showed a lot of interest in our company and even picked Fishlabs Entertainment as the most sympathetic and well-liked developer of the day! That’s really amazing and we’d like to say a big “Thank You” to Heiko Klinge and the rest of the Making Games team as well as everybody who visited us at our booth and listened to our presentations. You guys totally made our day and we really hope this wasn’t the last time we took part in a Making Games Talents event!
